Oak Class Curriculum Provision – Summer Term 2017

Oak Class Curriculum Provision Summer Term 2017

Welcome back after the Easter holidays and to the start of our final term. Below we have outlined what we are proposing to cover this term and some other information you might find useful. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

In English we will be using film as a stimulus for different writing genres. The film we are studying will be Mulan. We will be doing a unit of work focused on poetry and free verse as well as looking at information and explanation texts. It is advised that children read at home every night and a comment is written in their Reading Record. The reading records are checked every Friday. Children will learn spellings within their grammar lessons and handwriting and presentation will be a key focus this term.

In Maths we will follow the objectives outlined in the Inspire scheme of work. Year 3 will be looking at multiplication, division and word problems. Year 4 will focus on graphs and charts and various fraction work. The times tables scheme is up and running now and the children are enjoying their weekly test. Please encourage your child to keep practising their times and related division facts at home.

In Science children will be studying two topics this term: ‘Grouping living things’ where following on from last term we will look at classification keys and how to sort plants and animals. ‘Human nutrition’ is our second topic where we focus on the digestive system and teeth and bones.

In Computing the children will become musicians and complete the unit called ‘We are Musicians.’

Our Geography topic will be about Coasts and children will become familiar with key vocabulary and improving their map reading skills.

The History unit focuses on a non-European society that provides contrasts with British history. This study will focus on the Mayan civilization.

Art and Design Technology will be making pop-up storybooks using our English skills from previous terms. The second part of the term will focus on food technology where we will be making sandwich snacks linking to our Science knowledge of healthy eating.

In R.E children will learn about the teachings of Jesus.

This term’s Music lessons will focus on rhythm and beat.

PE we will have P.E on a Friday this term so please ensure that the correct PE kit (t-shirt, black shorts and trainers/plimsolls) is in school. All items should be named. Kits should remain in school at all times and be taken home at weekends only if they are dirty.

Homework will be set on Tuesdays to be returned the following Monday. Maths homework will be set on Thursdays to be returned the following Wednesday or Thursday. Homework may also be set to support topic or science work.

Water bottles

As the weather gets warmer we actively encourage children to bring in water bottles so that they can easily access water throughout the day. Please ensure the bottle has your child’s name on it. A hat is also a good idea to have in school on hot days.

Mile a day

The children have been and will continue to run a mile a day and therefore do need a change of footwear in school every day.
